Welcome, fellow runners and fitness enthusiasts. Fast running exists on a spectrum, and then there's whatever Jacob Kiplimo did in Barcelona.
The fastest half marathon ever recorded is 56:42, run by Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo on 16 February 2025. That's roughly 2:41 per kilometer, sustained for 21.1 km. Read that pace again. It's what a lot of recreational runners can barely hold for a single kilometer, let alone twenty-one of them.
Kiplimo became the first person to break 57 minutes for the distance that day. His 15 km split, 40:07, was itself the fastest ever run at that checkpoint. World Athletics called it the biggest single jump in the men's half-marathon record. Then came the catch: the run wasn't eligible for ratification, because the course didn't fully meet record regulations.
That catch matters more than it sounds like it should.
Search "fastest half marathon ever" and you'll get two different answers depending on whether you mean the fastest time actually run, or the fastest one that counts on paper. As of September 2026, those aren't the same number.
56:42, the number that actually happened
Kiplimo ran it at the eDreams Mitjà Marató Barcelona by Brooks, finishing almost two minutes clear of Kenya's Geoffrey Kamworor (58:44). Average pace: about 2:41/km, or 22.3 km/h.
For context: a 1:30 half marathon averages 4:16/km. A two-hour half marathon averages 5:41/km. At Kiplimo's pace, a runner would clear 10 km in about 26:50 and still have 11.1 km left to run at the same speed.
That's the part that's hard to sit with.
The half marathon sits in an awkward zone between speed and endurance. At the elite level that line basically disappears. You need the raw pace of a shorter race and the durability to hold something close to it for over an hour. Kiplimo has both.
How Barcelona unfolded
Conditions were good: about 13°C, no real wind, a fast course. Pacemakers went out at roughly 2:45/km. Kiplimo had other ideas and picked it up by kilometer three.
5 km: about 13:34. 10 km: about 26:53. 15 km: 40:07, after some early confusion about the split. 20 km: about 53:42. Then he just didn't slow down for the last kilometer, crossing in 56:42.
The previous official record was Yomif Kejelcha's 57:30 from Valencia, October 2024. Kiplimo beat it by 48 seconds, which sounds small until you remember this is a sport where records usually move by single-digit seconds.
Breaking it into pieces most people can picture
At 2:41/km, Kiplimo's splits work out to something like 5 km in 13:27, 10 km in 26:54, 15 km in 40:21, 20 km in 53:48, then the final 1.0975 km to finish. Real races don't unfold that cleanly (people surge, fade, react to whoever's next to them), but the numbers still give a sense of scale.
A recreational runner might be thrilled with a 25-minute 5K. Kiplimo's half-marathon average pace was faster than half that time, held for four times the distance.
Why "fastest ever" and "world record" aren't the same thing right now
Kiplimo's 56:42 is the quickest half marathon anyone has run. It just isn't legal for record purposes, because of the course conditions.
The actual ratified record situation kept moving after that. Kejelcha ran 56:51 in Buenos Aires on 23 August 2026, taking the record back from Kiplimo's 57:20, set in Lisbon in March 2026. That Buenos Aires time is itself listed as pending ratification, not confirmed yet. So even "the record" right now comes with an asterisk.

Kiplimo went back to the city where he first broke the world record in 2021 and ran 57:20, with no pacemakers this time. He hit 5 km in 13:28, 10 km in 27:00, stayed with Kenya's Nicholas Kipkorir for most of the race, then pulled away late, closing the last 5 km in about 13:31. Kipkorir finished in 58:08.
It was a reminder that Barcelona wasn't a fluke. Kiplimo had been operating at this level for years already.
Kiplimo's first world record, back in 2021
He ran 57:31 at the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon in November 2021, ratified the following February, taking the record from Kamworor's 58:01 (Copenhagen, 2019). He was 21 years old at the time.
Kejelcha shaved a second off that in 2024, running 57:30 in Valencia. Then Barcelona happened, and the sub-57 barrier that people had been circling for years was just gone.
What makes him this fast
Kiplimo's résumé spans track, cross country, and road. His personal bests: 12:40.96 for 5,000m, 26:33.93 for 10,000m, 56:42 for the half. He's a two-time world cross-country champion and an Olympic bronze medalist.
There's a logic to it. Cross country teaches you to hold rhythm on bad terrain when your legs are already cooked. Track builds raw speed and efficiency. Road racing asks for both at once. Kiplimo has spent his whole career across all three.
Putting the pace in perspective
Line up at a local half marathon and picture trying to stay with Kiplimo. You'd barely finish your first kilometer before most runners settled into anything close to their normal pace. By the time a two-hour finisher reaches 10 km, Kiplimo would already be through the halfway point and pushing toward the finish.
It's absurd. That's kind of the point.

The gap between a one-hour half marathon and the fastest one ever run is about nine seconds per kilometer. Doesn't sound like much. Multiply it by 21 and it's a canyon, and closing that gap at the elite level is brutal.
The 21 km vs. 21.1 km thing
People call it a "21K," but the official distance is 21.0975 km. Those extra 97.5 meters aren't trivial. Courses have to be measured to World Athletics standards for a time to count as a record. That's exactly why Kiplimo's 56:42 stands as the fastest time run but not the official record. The stopwatch doesn't care about course certification. The record book does.
Could someone run 55 minutes?
A 55-minute half needs about 2:37/km, only four seconds per kilometer faster than what Kiplimo already did. Four seconds sounds like nothing. Over 21 km it's the difference between history and almost-history, and at that level, a bad gust of wind or one awkward drink handoff can be the whole margin.
Hard to say if it happens. But five years ago, sub-57 sounded like a stretch too.
What any of this means if you're not an elite runner
You don't need to train like Kiplimo to care about this. Most people won't get within an hour of his time, and that's fine. What actually carries over is more basic: the work happens long before race day, and it's cumulative.
Whether your goal is finishing your first half marathon, breaking two hours, or chipping three minutes off a PR, that goal is yours and it counts. A 56:42 is a world-class performance. A 2:10 can mean just as much to the person who trained months for it.
Same distance for everyone. Different stories at the finish line.
